There is no doubt that going abroad to learn a foreign language such as Spanish is one of the most exciting ways of studying. Being immersed in the language while living an unbelievable experience abroad will really help you get to grips with the language and have a great time as well.

One issue to consider before you head off, though, is whether it makes sense to do some learning even before you pack your suitcase. By combining some study time at home with some in your destination you can get the following benefits.

Get Comfortable

When you first start speaking Spanish you are going to feel a bit weird. If this is the first foreign language you have seriously studied then after a lifetime of saying the same words you are suddenly going to have a whole new vocabulary. At first this can be daunting and you could feel very nervous about opening your mouth and saying something which doesn’t yet have an instinctive meaning to you. If you can get past this initial phase in the comfort of your own home city then you will feel a lot more comfortable about making the most of your time abroad.

Get Your Mistakes Out of the Way

We all make plenty of mistakes when we learn a second language. This is perfectly natural but you might get put off if you make them in a setting you aren’t familiar with. If your first classes are in a country where the language is spoken on a daily basis then you could end up getting downhearted at making error after error in normal conversations such as in stores and hotels. It is far better to get these mistakes out of the way in front of a trained teacher who understands what you are trying to say and has heard many other students make exactly the same mistakes as you.

Build Up the Anticipation

It is a fantastic idea to build up your levels of anticipation before you make any exciting trip to a foreign land. One sure fire way of doing this is by getting to grips with the language. This will let you speak to native speakers, read books and listen to music in Spanish, which will let you understand more of the culture before you travel. Don’t forget of taking Spanish classes in New York before you head off and you will enjoy the build up to your trip a lot more.

Nicaragua is a beautiful and diverse country, largely natural and unspoiled, with wonderful people and a fascinating place in history. Roughly the size of the U.S. state of New York, Nicaragua has a greatly varying geography and climate, from the cool mountains in the north, to the hot and humid central lowlands, to the breezy beaches on the pacific coast as well as the marshy lowlands of the Atlantic coast.

NSLS schools are located in key areas of Nicaragua that allow our students access to the various social and natural environments in the pueblos, cities, countryside, lakes and beaches on the Spanish-speaking western half of the country. Because Nicaragua is relatively unspoiled by over-tourism, you can visit many interesting places without fighting crowds and can still be done on a shoestring budget!.

Matagalpa is the second most important city in Nicaragua and is known as the “Pearl of the North” and “Land of Eternal Spring.”

Matagalpa was founded by the Spaniards in 1554 during an attempt to find a water passage to the “Northern Sea”, the Caribbean. (Nicaragua’s Spanish colonization originated from the direction of the Pacific Ocean, which was called the Southern Sea by the Spaniards In the 1800’s, there was a Danish and German influence in Matagalpa due to a few reasons, one being that there was gold found in the area during that time. For this reason, you will see lighter-skinned Nicaraguans who often have green or blue eyes (some of the most physically beautiful people in the world).Spanish Courses in Matagalpa .
Matagalpa is a wonderful place for your Spanish-studying adventure. It is cooler than much of the country and is nestled in a beautiful mountainous setting. Learn Spanish in Leon Nicaragua about 20 miles east of the present site. The city was abandoned in 1610, after an eruption of the Momotombo volcano, located only a couple miles away, which left extensive damage in the form of flooding from Lake Managua. The inhabitants decided to move to its current location next to the Indigenous town of Subtiava. The ruins of the abandoned city are known as “León Viejo” and were excavated in 1960. In the year 2000, León Viejo was declared an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It is also the second largest city in Nicaragua, after Managua. It was founded by the Spaniards as Santiago de los Caballeros de León and rivals Leon, Nicaragua, in the number of historic Spanish colonial homes and churches. As of 2005, the city had an estimated population of about 175,000 people which increases sharply during university season with many students coming from other Nicaraguan provinces. It is the capital and municipality of the León department.Spanish courses in Leon Nicaragua . Spanish Lessons in Leon Nicaragua

Located on the Pan-American Highway, 150 km north of Managua, Estelí is a fast growing and progressive city of about 119,000 people. It enjoys a pleasant climate throughout most of the year due to its location in the north central highlands at a mean elevation of 844 m above sea level. The city is also surrounded by forested mountains and plateaus that go up to 1600 m above sea level, some which are protected as natural reserves.

Estelí was the scene of heavy fighting in the war against the Somoza government in 1979. The land around Estelí is perfect for growing tobacco for use in cigars, and the town became a refuge for Cuban cigar makers after the Cuban Revolution in 1959. Award winning cigars have made Estelí one of the most important cigar-producing cities in the world. EstelíEsteli Nicaragua also has many language schools, restaurants, and hotels that cater to tourists traveling to nearby natural reserves and other parts of the region. Natural Reserves around the area include Miraflor, Tisey-Estanzuela, Las Brisas-Quiabuc, Tomabu, Tepesomoto and Moropotenteeel.

If you are looking for a more rural setting to study Spanish, Esteli may be the place for you. It has a bustling city feel while at the same time, it is located far from the capital and the people are very rural in their speech, demeanor and humility. Some of the nicest folks you will ever meet live in this great pueblo and they love to speak Spanish with the “extranjeros” and they are extremely patient.

In Esteli, you will study four hours a day, the classes consist of two hours of grammar and two hours of conversation or we can adapt the class structure to your needs and desires. We will gladly help you arrange a homestay with a local family or arrange for you to stay in one of the low-cost hotels or hostels here. Esteli is one of the destinations that people often stay past their intended time because they just get enamored with the place and the people. Let us know your desires and we’ll set everything up for you!

Located on the Pacific coast of Nicaragua, just 30 kilometers north of Costa Rica, two hours south of Managua, San Juan has all that Costa Rica has but without the “overly-tourist” feel.

The beach is lined with restaurants and bars and the town is one of the safest areas in Nicaragua. You will feel comfortable walking anytime day or night. You can take surf lessons, walk around and see the sights and be completely immersed in Spanish. San Juan is a highly-recommended place to see, even if you are not going to be taking classes there. Our students who study in other cities generally HAVE to see this beach village before they leave Nicaragua.

Spanish classes

Our school is well-organized and provides a high quality Spanish-immersion experience. You will study mornings and have the afternoons to partake in all that San Juan has to offer.

Granada , a colonial tourist town 45 minutes south of Managua is a wonderful step back in time. With Architecture from the 1500’s when Spain conquered this part of the world, Granada offers a fantastic environment to learn. With very low crime and that “tourist feel”, one can walk around almost anyplace in Granada day or night. You cant beat Granada if asthetics is your thing. Situated on Lake Nicaragua, the temperature is always 5 degrees (C) cooler than in the capitol. It is a daily occurrence to see horse-and-buggies walking the streets around Central Park and vendors selling their wares on the corners. There is a whole street just dedicated to restaurants and bars selling everything from typical cuisine to pizza and burgers.

Granada Nicaragua

The school here is staffed by people who are genuinely interested in helping you to learn. By Nicaraguan standards, this town is very touristy. By western standards, its still 100 years in the past. Very few people speak English so you will get the best of both worlds…full immersion but in a comfortable tourist-style town. Spend the mornings in classes and the afternoons taking boat tours of the lake and checking out everything else that Granada has to offer. There is a pretty good night-life for a little town as well!

Managua, the capital of Nicaragua has a diverse group of people all living in a relatively small area. It has all that one could need and more.

Managua has the richest and the poorest population in the country. You really get a broad spectrum of people. Most people in Managua don’t speak English, so its really a complete-immersion experience. If you don’t mind the noise of the big city, there is so much to see here. Transportation is cheap and plentiful. A taxi costs no more than $5 to go anywhere in the city limits.

Our school in Managua. They work mainly with the NGO organizations and the embassies, working hard to get people out working in the field and speaking and understanding quickly. It’s a great place to get a jumpstart on your Spanish. The school is more “academic” in its approach than the schools in the beach towns as their students are less likely to be your average tourist. Managua Nicaragua

If you like the nightlife, the capitol is the place to be. There is nothing else like it in this country. From discos with great carribean, latino and disco music, it’s a “happenin place”. The city isnt for everybody, but for those who want the complete immersion experience, heres a great option!
