The coldest city in the country, and city with a highest women empowerment
The school in Matagalpa has 9 staff and teachers with more than eight years of experience teaching Spanish as a second language. In line with our motto, “Learn, Know, and Feel Our Language and Our Culture,” you will have the opportunity to learn Spanish in a warm and pleasant environment, acquiring the necessary tools to communicate and enrich your knowledge of our people, customs, and traditions.
Noelia Corrales is the local coordinator of this program.
The family-homestay is the usual lodging option for students studying at the school in Matagalpa, however you are always welcome to make your own arrangements and we are always willing to help with some suggestions or to set things up. Our homestays are fully inspected and have been used previously by other students. Again, security is our main concern for students and Matagalpa is one of the safest options in Nicaragua. All homestays are equipped with the essentials that you will need to be comfortable with your stay while you study!
The Matagalpa school also offers various activities to students who wish to participate. Just ask and we will let you know what excursions are planned for the period that you will be here.

The city has a population of 109,100 (2005 census), while the population of the department is more
than 480,000. Matagalpa is Nicaragua's fifth largest city and one of its most commercially active outside of Managua. Matagalpa is the second most important city in Nicaragua and is known as the "Pearl of the North" and "Land of Eternal Spring."
Matagalpa was founded by the Spaniards in 1554 during an attempt to find a water passage to the "Northern Sea", the Caribbean. (Nicaragua's Spanish colonization originated from the direction of the Pacific Ocean, which was called the Southern Sea by the Spaniards In the 1800’s, there was a Danish and German influence in Matagalpa due to a few reasons, one being that there was gold found in the area during that time. For this reason, you will see lighter-skinned Nicaraguans who often have green or blue eyes (some of the most physically beautiful people in the world).
Matagalpa is a wonderful place for your Spanish-studying adventure. It is cooler than much of the country and is nestled in a beautiful mountainous setting. Here you will study four hours a day, the classes consist of two hours of grammar and two hours of conversation or we can adapt the class structure to your needs and desires. We can help you set up a homestay with a local family or a stay at one of the local low-cost hotels or hostels. Just let us know your desires and we will help you make it a reality!
